AEW Is Now a Nut Free School
- Lena S
Nuts on school campuses can be fatal to some students. The close quarters of a school promote those with allergies to possibly have a life threatening allergy if students have nuts. This needs to be changed for the sake of kids such as my younger brother, who has a severe nut allergy. Accidentally consuming a nut of any sort would cause him to go into anaphylactic shock and be rushed to a hospital, and my brother is not the only person affected by this. Almost 15 million Americans, which is about two kids in every classroom, suffer from the same issue. We need to show our support by creating a safer environment for these people. Food allergies can develop at any stage in life, and you don’t know you have one until you have a reaction. Even if you are lucky enough to not be affected by an allergy, showing consideration to others that are affected will keep them safe and worry free.
Eliminating all nuts from your snack and lunch each day at school seems daunting, but it’s really quite simple and there are hundreds of alternatives. Just swapping out some foods for a safer food could make all the difference. I have created a list of some nut free alternatives to introduce to school diets so you can start helping this cause.

The Ocean In Me - A Freewrite
- Rachel S
If I could be any object, I would be the ocean because we are alike in many ways. First of all, the ocean is flowing constantly and swiftly moves against the shore. I try my best to go with the flow and I do not make a big scene when things do not go my way. I always try to be calm and relaxed and not to get mad easily. Although the waves are relaxing when they crash upon the sand a storm must eventually come and the waves become harsh and scary similar to me when I get mad. Everyone is afraid to go in the water and they usually leave once the comforting beach turns sour. Whenever I get mad, people are usually afraid to talk to me and are afraid that I will blow up due to my anger. Next, the ocean stretches out from country to country and from continent to continent. It travels all around the world and can see every place there is to see. I love traveling and have been to many different places on the globe. These places include Israel, Hawaii, Costa Rica, Cabo, Australia and many more. I very much enjoy going all around the world experiencing everything there is to do. Also, the ocean is very mysterious and is yet to be fully understood. Many secrets lie beneath the glistening surface that are waiting to be uncovered. I hold many secrets in my busy mind and there are aspects of my life that most people do not know about me. Some people do not see what a good-hearted friend I am until they really get to know me. Furthermore, the ocean is beautiful and bursting with astounding aquatic life under the waves. I, so I have been told, have an amazing personality and a beautiful mind. I have been told that I am a lively person and that I have way too much energy for one human being. In conclusion, the ocean and I have very many similarities.
The Mortal Camera - A Freewrite
- Levi K
At a first glance, I appear to be a mere mortal human being. Little does the world know that I am actually a camera. To begin with, a camera without a lens perceives a blurry image with no form. Similar to a camera, I require my glasses to see vivid detail. Glasses are to me as a lens is to a camera, guiding us respectively along the way. Furthermore, a camera captures a single moment in time through a snapshot and records it as a permanent image. Likewise, even if a moment lasts for a split second in my life, I can “download” it to my “memory folder” and make it permanent. Often, I access special memories and relive the picturesque moments I have experienced. In addition, a camera becomes most valuable when its pictures paint a thousand words for others to observe. I strive to share my experiences, stories, and ideas with others. Like a photograph sitting in a museum, I feel accomplished when my thoughts are appreciated by others and contribute to their lives. Finally, cameras thrive on travel. If I could, I would travel the world and observe all of its natural beauty. Like a camera, I require very little preparation to travel. I simply need my glasses to serve as my lens and my brain to attend to details and act as my memory card. Little does anybody know, I am an immortal camera living in the body of a mortal human being.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story WARNING - CONTAINS SPOILERS
- Gordon L
If you are a fan of the beloved series Star Wars, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was the movie to see this holiday season. Make no mistake, this movie is technically not a part of the Star Wars saga. It is a “Star Wars Story”, and there are several more planned in the future including a stand-alone movie for Han Solo, the smuggler, coming soon. These Star Wars stories likely wouldn’t exist if the Disney hadn’t purchased the rights to Lucasfilm, the creators of Star Wars. As incredible as Rogue One is, it is essentially just a cash-grab to keep us patient while we wait for Episode 8. Enough talk about Disney’s unhealthy obsession over money, let’s talk about the movie itself. I’m going to start with the plot, so here’s a blatantly obvious SPOILER.
SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALERT SPOILER ALE
The movie starts out on an unnamed planet, where protagonist Jyn Erso lives with her mother and father, the latter of which worked as an architect on the Death Star. The time period of this movie is in between Episodes 3 & 4. Director Krennic, the antagonist, is seen marching toward the Erso family’s peaceful residence, with his squadron of Death Troopers, in tow. Galen Erso, the father, says goodbye to his wife (Lyra Erso) and goes to confront Krennic. Lyra gives Jyn a necklace and tells her to “trust in the force.” Jyn then runs to a bunker to hide from the Empire but not before witnessing the confrontation between her father and the Imperial director. Krennic tries to convince Galen to rejoin the Empire, but he refuses, and lies that his wife is dead when Krennic asks about his family. But when the dastardly director orders his troopers to search the place, Lyra springs out from her hiding spot and shoots Krennic’s arm. Lyra is then shot and killed, and a Death Trooper discovers a Stormtrooper toy lying in the grass. Krennic barks at his men to find the child, and Jyn runs away to the bunker. Later on, Saw Gerrera, a friend of Galen, comes to the bunker and takes Jyn to safety aboard his spaceship. 15 years later, Jyn is captured onboard an Imperial transport shuttle, until suddenly, rebel forces break into the ship and free the prisoners. Jyn, not realizing the Rebels are on her side, attacks their numbers. She runs out of the transport, but is stopped by a reprogrammed Imperial security droid, named K-2SO, who tells her she is being rescued. Jyn is taken to the rebel base on the 4th moon of the planet Yavin where she meets Mon Mothma, the leader of the Rebellion. She explains that the Empire is building a mega weapon with the capabilities of destroying entire planets, and Jyn can help find the plans for it. And so, the plot thickens. The Rebel Alliance, including Jyn Erso, K-2SO, Cassian Andor, Chirrut Imwe, and Baze Malbus, must steal the Death Star plans from the Empire before it’s too late.
So, let’s talk about the positives and negatives of Rogue One.

PROS:
- The characters are hilarious. The Rebellion’s one-liners are priceless, and K-2SO is my new favorite Star Wars character because of his wit.
- The story was tense. It’s sure to keep you on the edge of your seat, and you really did feel sorry for Jyn Erso.
- The CGI was pretty well done and an improvement from Episode1.
- While it technically IS a prequel, it was giving off the prequel trilogy vibe from time to time.
- The evil guys were kind of lame. Darth Vader was the only villain whose screen time I anticipated.
- I was a little confused while remembering all the names of the characters and planets.
Oh and by the way everybody DIES!

Bring Your Acer This Week
- Alana A
A.E. Wright is extremely fortunate to have tech personnel from the District spend all of next week with us. They are going to be proactive and help us solve any problems that start to arise on the Acers! They will be here from January 9 - January 13 in your history class. Also, if you bring a computer other than your Acer to school, please set it aside for the week and bring your fully charged Acer. If you have battery problems make sure to bring your charger so your computer can be on, and the problem can be diagnosed. Get ready for all of your Acer difficulties to finally go away!
Why Women Should Accept Compliments
- Gaby M
It's not your fault someone likes the way you look. Women have a tendency to shy away from compliments when really they should accept them. It's bad enough that we don't accept the compliment, but then we end up telling the person how terrible we actually look that day. The person wouldn't be complimenting us if we looked bad that day; we should just accept the nice words and thank him/her. It is bad for one's self-confidence to reject compliments. In fact, studies have shown that we should accept it and not be ashamed. The disapproval of receiving compliments has been proven not good for women's mental, physical, and work state. If anything, rejecting the compliment could make your day worse than it could've been. Saying thank you and furthermore reciprocating the compliment is a wonderful step. Women don't need to reject complements anymore in this day and age where we are able to feel more comfortable with our bodies and looks no matter what the current expectations are for women. Women should always feel comfortable with who they are. Taking a simple compliment can really improve one's confidence, boost their morale, and make their day better all together. So ladies, next time, just say thank you! Don't be afraid, we are all beautiful no matter what one person says or thinks. Try out a thank you next time and see how much better you feel!
The History of Hannukkah
- Yousef A
Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday that is celebrated for 8 days at the end of the year. This holiday originated in 200 B.C. when Israel became controlled by Antiochus III. Antiochus lll was the king of Syria at this time. Antiochus allowed Jewish people to practice religion. Antiochus III’s son provided less benefit. It was believed he made the Jewish religion illegal. He also forced the Jewish people to worship the Greek Gods. Later in 168 B.C, Antiochus lV- son of Antiochus lll massacred a thousand people in the city’s temple. He constructed altars to pigs, Zeus, and destroyed the temple’s walls. Soon after, the priest Matthias and his five sons freed Antiochus and the Seleucid monarchy. In 166 B.C, Matthias passed away and his son Judah took over. Judah then took the helm. Two years later, Jews were no longer in Syria and had journeyed to Jerusalem. Jewish people then relied on warfare tactics. Judah called his followers to cleanse the second temple. They rebuilt the altar and lit the menorah. The menorah had a gold candelabrum. The gold candelabrum had seven branches that represented knowledge and creation. They were meant to be burning every night. In the Talmud, Judah and other Jews used untainted olive oil to keep the menorah’s candles lit. The olive oil was meant to be lit for one night, but it stayed lit for eight days. This moment may have started the tradition of Hanukkah for years to come. However, some historians think differently about the history of Hanukkah. Jerusalem was under Antiochus lV’s rule was when the Civil War erupted. There were two camps of Jews. One was Jews who adopted Jewish and Syrian customs. The other camp was people who imposed Jewish rules and traditions. In the end the traditional people won. Scholars also suggested to make Hanukkah an important holiday for the Jewish religion. Hanukkah includes feasting, prayer, and festivities. There are also Hanukkah traditions. The celebration revolves around a menorah. There are 8 nights in Hanukkah and each night one candle is lit to the menorah one by one. When someone lights the candle they are the shamash while everyone else says a prayer while the candle is being lit. People eat foods like latkes and sufganiyot. They also play with a top called a dreidel. Here in North America Hanukkah is really popular because sometimes it overlaps with Christmas like this year. So for the Jewish people that also celebrate Christmas can celebrate both. So for those who celebrate Hanukkah here is a shout-out to you. Hope you had a Happy Hanukkah!
Spirit Week
- Yousef A
Spirit week is a favorite tradition at A.E. Wright! The Leadership class plans dress-up days that most students really enjoy! Monday was Monsters University day so we dressed up in college wear. In addition, Tuesday was Alice in Wonderland (Mad Hatter) day so we wore crazy hats, hair, and hoods. There was also a lunchtime activity during which students guess the candy the in their mouths while blindfolded. Secondly, Tuesday was the day where sixth grader Yousuf Asghar himself appeared on Spartan Station doing the closing with the Leadership students! Next, Wednesday was Mean Girls day so we dressed up in pink because “On Wednesdays we wear pink”. Thursday was Frozen day so we all wore pajamas. There was also lunchtime karaoke on that day. Thursday was Mrs. Unzueta’s birthday too! Finally, on Friday it was A.E Wright’s annual spirit rally so everyone wore their spirit wear, something blue and white, or Dude be Nice Shirts. The Spirit Rally took place in the gym and students were chosen by their 6th period teachers to play in the obstacle courses or the meet me in the middle game. (See Alana’s article for more information about the spirit rally winners). Spirit Week may be over for now, but it was a great success, and I can’t wait for year!
Spirit Rally
- Alana A
The crowd cheered wildly as students put on aprons, sat on balloons, and stuck their noses in vaseline. A. E. Wright’s sixth and seventh grade Spirit Rally had begun. The rally is composed of two activities, two relay races and Birdie on a Perch. Mrs. Jamal’s seventh grade history class successfully took home the win of the first relay race, with Jacob throwing on an extremely “lavish” apron, science goggles, and potato sack. He then quickly hopped towards his two classmates, Danika and Emily, who stood anxiously waiting for him. Then, the pair of extremely coordinated girls bounced a tennis ball back and forth on two clipboards, with Anika ready to catch the ball in a cup at the end. Anika then quickly sprinted to a table where she dunked her nose in vaseline and successfully placed numerous cotton balls in a bucket with only the power of her trusty nose. Finally, Kimia moved a full soda can across a bumpy table using only her neck. To top it all off, Jillian sat on five balloons and popped them. Although, keep in mind this is all happening in the course of about a two minute time frame, and it could not have been done without amazing teamwork! In the second relay race, Mrs. Tepper’s seventh grade English class came in first place after having to do the same course as described above. During this round, Preston hopped his heart out in a potato sack, Max and Kai bounced balls beautifully over to Natasha who sacrificed her nose in a vat of vaseline. The hilarity continued as Eliza scooted a Sprite with her face over to Harjap who gave it his all by popping balloons with his butt! The crowd laughed and cheered as the participants rushed through these creative obstacles!
Then, our Spirit Rally switched gears and the magical game of Birdie on a Perch began. About twenty students (which become ten pairs) are selected to participate in this ever so tense game. Ten people line up on the left side of the room, and you guessed it, the other ten go to the opposite side of the room and face their partner. Once everyone is in position, the moderator yells, “Birdie on a Perch” and all of the players run towards their partner as fast as they can, to eventually meet in the middle of the room. One person takes a knee, (almost as if they are going to say, “Will you marry me?”) and their partner sits on top of their knee. Once they have successfully completed the “Birdie on a Perch” pose, everyone walks backward from their partner. Then, regardless of whether the players have returned to their starting positions yet, the moderator can yell at any time“Birdie on a Perch.” Then, the players have to repeat the steps, and the pair of players that completes the task last is eliminated. Obviously, the process continues until there is one pair of players, and those two people happened to be Duke and Ethan, seventh graders, from the one and only Mrs. Jamal’s class. Finally, after a wonderful assembly filled with tremendous amounts of school spirit, the crowd wound down, and all of the students returned to class.

Thanksgiving
- Alex G
With Thanksgiving approaching rapidly, excitement for one of America's biggest holidays is spreading like butter on toast.
Thanksgiving celebrates a day in November 1691 when the early settlers of America and leaders from the Wampanoag tribe had a festival with food, hunting and games. It was a celebration of the Pilgrims’ first successful harvest. They invited Wampanoag leaders as a thank you for helping them get familiar with the new land, and the resources in the area.
On the first Thanksgiving, things were a little different than they are today. There were no turkeys because they weren’t found in the area. Also, there weren’t any pumpkins for pumpkin pie or potatoes because those ingredients hadn’t been introduced to that area yet.
George Washington made it a national holiday in 1789, but it didn’t became an annual tradition until Sarah Josepha Hale (author of the famous rhyme, “Mary Had a Little Lamb”) campaigned for almost thirty years to make it more popular. Now, it is always celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. This year, it falls on November 24.
Happy Thanksgiving! We hope that on November 24 you will remember one of America’s most historic events. Think about how when different peoples come together, great things can happen.
Instagram Snap Stories?
- Molly S
What do you think about the “Instagram Snap Stories”? While some kids without Snapchat enjoy using the “Instagram Snap Stories,” many dislike the idea of it. As one student at A.E. Wright put it, “It takes away the purpose of Snapchat...Why?” Kevin Systrom, the creator of Instagram, said creating the snap stories in Instagram was an interest for a long time. As I went around the school, I took a poll on what kids believed. The poll below displays the amount of students who like and dislike the snap stories. We can clearly observe that A.E Wright dislikes the “Instagram Snap Stories”. Most 6th graders didn’t have an opinion. Seventh grade was all over the board. Eighth grade never liked the snapchat stories on Instagram. Obviously, A.E Wright Spartans have many different opinions. In conclusion, Instagram Snap Stories have had mixed reactions from the public.

New Chipotle in Calabasas
- Yousuf A
Calling all Chipotle fans and those who are willing to try Chipotle. Do you like Mexican food and the restaurant Chipotle? Well, you’re in luck because there is a new Chipotle opening up in The Summit at Calabasas, which is located in the center with Erewhon and Jersey Mike’s Subs. It is located at 26791 Agoura Road Suite D1. The new Chipotle will be in the former spot of Village Fish Market which closed three years ago. People are working on the Chipotle from the inside. They have their chairs up, their menu, and their soda fountains up as well. No date has been set when the Chipotle is going to open, but they are hiring. Other nearby locations include one in Westlake Village and two in Woodland Hills. However, if you haven’t heard about Chipotle it is a fast, casual, Mexican food place. They serve burritos, tacos, quesadillas, Coke products and more. If you crave Mexican food or if Chipotle is your favorite place to eat then you’ll want to have it more than one time a week.
Veteran's Day Assembly
- Becca B
What does it mean to be a veteran? The actual definition is a person who has had long experience in a particular field. To be a military veteran is so much more than that. It is a person who served in the active military, naval, or air service and who was discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable. Most people have been in the military, have family members in the military, or know someone who is serving actively or at one point was serving our amazing country. These heroes sacrificed so much to protect us and we take November 11 every year to honor them for their dedication and service. AE Wright respects this holiday and holds a Veteran’s Day Assembly where we thank those who have done so much for us. Although we have a beautiful assembly during the day where veterans are our guest speakers, classes will be sending letters to veterans as well. All in all, Veteran’s Day is a special holiday at AE Wright and should be for everyone outside of school as well.
Overwatch Taking the World by Storm
- Chance S
Calling all gamers! Overwatch is a semi-new game that features a more colorful palette compared to other famous action games such as Call of Duty. Fear not, this game is more kid friendly with different heroes to play as such as the basic mascot for the game Tracer (who is shown in the picture above) whom you can customize later on when you earn new skins, sprays, emotes, poses, and lastly highlight intros for when you get an awesome play in that match.
The history of how this game came to be is actually rather interesting because originally the game was supposed to be called Titan and look completely different and be played differently as well, but they soon had to cancel Titan and that’s when Overwatch was founded, and in about 6 months the game is already the 3rd best selling FPS in the world, with around 15 million copies sold! One of the biggest things about Overwatch is that it has a competitive mode where professional players and normal players can verse and earn higher ranks in the game. The main goal of every game is objective based where you either attack/defend a point or payload depending on the map. And if you're feeling like your character just doesn’t fit you when you go to your spawn point or die, you can switch the character as easy as that and maybe even pull in the win for your team. They are updating the game constantly, and every week they add a weekly brawl which has random new mechanics that you never know what they are. Overwatch is my favorite video game that I love to play.

Kirobo: Legend of a Space Companion
- Kyle P
Toyota is a world - famous car selling company. No one would ever expect a robot in the making from them. But just three years ago, Kirobo, a robotic space companion, was born.
Standing barely at 1 foot tall, this spectacular robot made friends with Japanese astronaut Koichi Wakata on board the International Space Station (ISS). It is a working communication robot that converses with real people throughout their day. Interestingly, the product was so popular in space that it will be on sale in 2017 in Japan as Kirobo Mini.
This autonomous robot uses artificial intelligence, that is, the robotic way to be able to perform tasks that normally only human intellect would be able to do, to communicate in a way that humans would themselves. The robot has a camera in its eyes that helps it recognize a specific person and start a topic that they like.
While the crew keeps up the hard work, Kiribo calmly talks with them in a regular manner that humans would aboard the ISS. This way, the whole crew can stay focused instead of multiple of them idling on the station. This would be a great help to the society for starting up conversations when you can’t think of one.
Personally, I would improve this robot by making it user friendly - letting each person customize its name for a specific face. This would let people call the robot what they want instead of Kirobo, as they might find the name a little too “robot” for a natural friend.
People can use this robot as a friend, or just a conversation starter. The robot’s lines are unscripted, so each sentence will be new and unique. To be honest, I would use this robot while I’m writing articles or essays like these - I’m usually really bad at grammar, and I would love if Kirobo helped me.
Kirobo has been a legend for three years. With its first debut in space and its upcoming arrival as a product in Japan, Kirobo is a robot to remember. I would certainly want to get my hands on one of these! (I love its rose red feet.)

Holes Acrostic Poem
- Josh B
Have I become a ghost, dead and broken?
Optimism left me.
Latching on to fear is my only hope.
Equality does not exist, even if I do my best.
Some times, I would think that the end is near.
Optimism left me.
Latching on to fear is my only hope.
Equality does not exist, even if I do my best.
Some times, I would think that the end is near.
Handwriting Notes May Help You
- Maya P
I KNOW RIGHT! Who would have thought that writing could actually enhance your brain power? Our founding fathers and anyone alive before this century really knew what they were doing. Science has proved that writing instead of typing helps your chances of becoming more intelligent. When you type you do not think of what you are typing about. The average student just copies what their teacher notes are without putting any thought into it. When you write it actually helps you think because it forces your brain to process information. It is imprinting the words into your head unlike typing. Old school writing is the best route to take. Pam A. Mueller performed a series of studies examining how students process information by giving them a test on the notes that they either typed or wrote. The student that wrote the notes got the higher grade. So next time you feel like you would rather type the notes, think again.
The Flip of the Future
- Kyle P
Imagine you’re in a talent show. Someone gets on stage. Mike Senatore, age 18, flips a water bottle in midair and lands it perfectly upright. The crowd goes wild. Everybody cheers and screams. You’ve never seen anything like this before…
This single flip immediately soon became the most popular internet craze ever. People across the world started doing water bottle flips and posting it on popular social media sites. Kids started doing them as challenges with their friends and practicing the “sport” at home. People invented new water bottle tricks such as double flips, continuous flips, cap flips, etc. Many popular YouTube channels posted videos of themselves trying water bottle flips or making up new extreme challenges with them.
The first extreme water bottle flip challenge video was posted by How Ridiculous on YouTube. The channel only had 10,000 subscribers at the time, so it was a fairly unpopular video reaching only two million views in five months. Although it was not an instant success, this video led other popular channels to post their own versions. One perfect instance of this effect was a video titled Water Bottle Flip Edition, by Dude Perfect, a very popular extreme stunt channel. By September 15, 2016, the video had approximately twenty five million views on YouTube. This video was posted just one month after the How Ridiculous video. The water bottle flip was still only starting to receive popularity, but Dude Perfect had around ten million subscribers thus increasing its popularity.
